The Dāmodara of Kali-yuga

 

A Newly Composed Verse:​

न धेनुरसमोषणं न दधिपात्रिकाभञ्जनं​

न मातृकृतबन्धनं च तनुते कलौ श्रीहरिः ।​

स्वयं ह्युदरमण्डले सुमणिदाम बध्नात्यहो​

स्वनाम च जपत्यसौ कपटवेशदामोदरः ॥पृथ्वी॥​

[Meter: pṛthvī (sing like anarpita-carīṁ cirāt)]:​

​

na dhenu-rasa-moṣaṇaṁ na dadhi-pātrikā-bhañjanaṁ​

na mātṛ-kṛta-bandhanaṁ ca tanute kalau śrī-hariḥ​

svayaṁ hy udara-maṇḍale sumaṇi-dāma badhnāty aho​

sva-nāma ca japaty asau kapaṭa-veśa-dāmodaraḥ​

Translation: In the age of Kali, Śrī Hari does not display pastimes of stealing milk-products. Neither does he display pastimes of breaking yogurt containers nor the pastimes of getting tied up by his mother.​

How wonderful! In this age, he himself ties a rope (dāma) strung with beautiful beads around his belly (udara). In this way, he is the very same Dāmodara, who is now crookedly disguised [as a sannyāsī] and is chanting his own name.​

PS: It is described by Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī (in his Prathama-caitanyāṣṭakam) that Caitanya Mahāprabhu would tie a rope (strung with beads) around his belly, and would chant Krishna's names on those beads.
